How to Make Friends While Abroad
Making amazing connections can be tricky enough in your home country, doing it while abroad adds even more of a challenge into the mix. However, it can also make it more worthwhile. Making friends with locals is essential for going abroad. They'll introduce you to the best bars, restaurants, and views. They can also teach you the coolest slang and help you navigate your foreign surroundings.
Sometimes you have to put yourself out there and step outside your comfort zone to make friends abroad. When I studied abroad in Spain I signed up by myself for hikes with local groups, lived with a homestay, and went to language exchanges every week. Going to events, bars, or even joining a local intramural soccer team are other great ways to meet people.
However, it's more than worth it to put in a little effort to make friends with the locals. Global friends will be some of the coolest people you meet, not only for their amazing navigation skills but also because of the new perspectives and insights they'll give you.
During your next trip, I highly encourage you to strike up that conversation with a stranger, ask your waiter about their day, or even join a local sports group. Yes, it can be intimidating and awkward, but the friendships you make will be that much more memorable.
